WORKSHOP IV

Workshop on Storage Area Networks

In conventional computing systems, servers and storage devices inhabit the same box and communicate through a local bus. In Storage Area Networks (SAN) servers and storage devices can be geographically separate and the interconnection is through a high speed network. SANs have lot of advantages like server-free backups, ease of management, sharing, etc. The goal of the workshop is to bring beginners, practioners, and researchers together and to provide a glimpse of complex research, implementation, and deployment issues for SAN.

Workshop Organizers

  • C. P. Ravikumar
  • V. Sridhar
  • S. H. Srinivasan

Advance Program

Talk 1: Introduction to Storage Area Network
2 :0 0 p m - 2 :3 0 p m
Speaker: C. P. Ravikumar, Texas Instruments India Pvt Ltd.
The talk will set the stage for the workshop by giving a tutorial overview of the SAN technology. The talk will also compare the three predominant SAN architectures, namely, Fibre Channel, Infiniband, and IP Storage.

Talk 2: IP Storage
2 :3 0 p m - 3 :0 0 p m
Speaker: V. Sridhar, Satyam Computer Services Ltd.
The talk will address the key issues in the implementation of IP storage.

Talk 3: High Performance storage networks
3 :0 0 p m - 3 :3 0 p m
Speaker: Vinod Menezes, Texas Instruments India Pvt Ltd.

Tea Break
3 :3 0 p m - 4 :0 0 p m

Talk 4: Virtualization
4 :0 0 p m - 4 :3 0 p m
Speaker: Raghavendra Kulkarni, Synergy Infotech Ltd., Bangalore.
This talk will address the issue of virtualization in Storage Area Networks. It will consider the need for special protocols and consider a case study to illustrate the ideas.

Talk 5: Security Issues in Fibre Channel
4 :3 0 p m - 5 :0 0 p m
Speaker: Dr. S.H. Srinivasan, Satyam Computer Services Ltd.
Fibre Channel has the same design vulnerabilities as original TCP/IP: extreme trust in the environment. In this paper we show how this can be exploited and outline some strategies that have been used to overcome them. These include both low-level solutions like zoning and architectural solutions involving digital certificates.

Discussion
5 :0 0 p m - 6 :0 0 p m
