Title: A high-resolution direct numerical siumlation of fluid turbulence with polymer additives Authors: Prasad Perlekar and Rahul Pandit Centre for Condensed Matter Theory Department of Physics Indian Institute of Science Bangalore 560 012 and Dhrubaditya Mitra Observatoire de la Cote D'azur BP 4229 06304 Nice Cedex 4 France Abstract: We carry out the highest-resolution direct numerical simulation (DNS) study to date of fluid turbulence with polymer additives. This requires the solution of the Navier-Stokes equation for the fluid coupled to the FENE-P model for the polymers; we solve the former by a pseudospectral method and the latter by a high-order finite-difference scheme. We have developed a parallel code for this problem on the IBM cluster in the SERC of the Indian Institute of Science. Our study has led to a detailed elucidation of drag-reduction-type phenomena, because of the polymer additives, in decaying, homogeneous, isotropic fluid turbulence.
