The
HiPC community has lost a most valued member with
the sudden and unexpected passing of Dr. Anirban
Chakrabarti on 7th September in Bangalore.
He was a member of our steering committee and
founding organizer of the HiPC Workshop on Grid and
Utility Computing and had become our touchstone for
future developments in grid computing.
He was the author of a definitive text in his field,
“Grid Computing Security” (Springer, 2007) and had
just co-authored the book titled “Distributed
Systems Security: Issues, Processes and Solutions”
due to be published by Wiley in 2009. As a principal
researcher at SETLabs, Infosys, India, he led the
Grid and High Performance Computing Division and had
received the Infosys Excellence Award for IP
creation in 2006. Dr. Chakrabarti honored our
conference by bringing his expertise and
specialization in grid computing and Internet
infrastructure to our venue and other international
forums like ADCOM and INFOCOM.
He obtained his engineering degree at Jadavpur
University and completed graduate studies at Iowa
State University, where he received the Research
Excellence Award. Dr. Chakrabarti returned to India
with great promise as part of the burgeoning,
home-grown IT community. This is a profound loss,
and we extend heartfelt sympathy to his family,
which includes his wife Lopa, his eight month old
son Ishaan and his mother. |
